My Baby Bump Journal: Week 17

[Put Dean in the basket instead of the floor whoops lol]

Now I've heard of "pregnancy brain" but I'm seriously at a new level! I feel like I have dementia and amnesia in the most extreme. :/ First I had my usual prenatal appointment at St. Peter's University Hospital since they moved I was supposed to go to their new location about 15 minutes away from the hospital. I ended up going to the old spot and since it was in the morning...I ended up being an hour late :/ Dear lord! Next going to another appointment thinking I was late when I was early...A MONTH EARLY! I got lost on the way home.

I've set so many things down and forgotten where I've placed them. I actually put my keys in the fridge. I put Maxwell in the bathroom and forgot [thought he was in the downstairs bathroom and I went crazy thinking he ran away! lol Dean's clean cloth diaper put it in the diaper pail when I kept the dirty one on.

I feel like a real mess! :/ I can't talk either. I think faster in my head and it just comes out all backwards or sideways or something. As if I am verbally dyslexic? Does that make sense? I don't know! But I try really hard to get it together...even if I end up looking or being stupid 98% of the time. :D lol Ah pregnancy I swear it messes you up more with each and every single pregnancy. Ughk :/ lol

Why Applebees Nurse-In

Hundreds of women and supporters are preparing for a nationwide nurse-in at Applebee’s locations across the country this coming weekend. On Saturday September 29th at 1:00pm we are requesting a nationwide nurse in at local Applebee’s restaurants to promote our rights to choose how we feed our babies and to help educate business and the public about breastfeeding. Even if you are not a nursing mother please go to an Applebee’s and let them know you are there for a Mother’s Right to Choose and let their staff know you support mothers and their choice on how and when to feed their children.

What is the cause of this nurse-in? Dawn Holland was sitting in a booth in the back of a nearly empty Applebee’s in Covington, Georgia last week around 2 o’clock in the middle of the afternoon when she had the cops called on her for merely breastfeeding her child, despite being within her legal rights to do so. Why were the cops called? Because the manager wanted her to get up and move herself and her child to their unsanitary bathroom to breastfeed or leave. Dawn refused to be shamed and breastfeed her child where people defecate. In an act of solidarity with Dawn, supporters are hoping to help spread awareness of the importance of breastfeeding and our basic human right choose when and where we nourish our children. In no situation where a mother is merely peacefully nourishing her child in public, whether it be from breast or bottle, should the police be called on her.

Why attend this nurse-in? For a many reasons. Nurse-ins are a powerful tool for increasing breastfeeding awareness and spreading education in a positive way, helping to decrease the number of negative incidents like this from happening one at a time. Did you know Applebee’s had a nationwide nurse in back in 2007 for a similar incident? Yes, they did. Someone dropped the ball and Applebee’s needs a reminder that their customer base cares about how families are treated. Secondly, nurse-ins help mothers find a community of mothers that help strengthen their confidence in parenthood, enabling them to feel like their choice of child nourishment is nothing to be ashamed of.

Without my first nurse-in experience, I would still be running off to nurse in bathrooms, cars, or fumbling with covers because of my modesty issues and, like so many other mothers, the fear of public scorn or confrontation was always in my mind. Why? Because our culture oversexualizes our breasts long before our babies are born and the importance of their biologicial function is never stressed. Now, I can easily meet my child’s needs in public because I am finally able to feel like breastfeeding is something to feel proud of, not be embarrassed about, because I am doing what is best for my family. Also, because Dawn’s child was a toddler, it is also important to spread the message that breastfeeding past infancy is just as normal as nursing a newborn and should be properly supported in our culture, as it is in countries across the world.

Mothers no not need to hide their nursing relationships with their older babies for fear of public scorn. Another reason nurse-ins are important is to bring awareness to the fact that most states, like Georgia, do not have enforcement provisions which provide legal protection against mothers from harassment. The manager who accosted Dawn did not receive a punishment for harassing her when the manager was at fault.

Do you know your state laws on breastfeeding in public? It is deplorable that only two states have laws that contain a penalty for violating a mother’s right to breastfeed. Under some state laws though, any unwanted touching, like a waiter placing a towel over a baby’s head (yes, that has been done), might be considered assault or battery. But should a negative nursing confrontation ever need to escalate to that level for the mother’s attacker to be given a penalty? No. Every single state that doesn’t provide protection for nursing mothers isn’t doing enough. State legislatures need to gain knowledge that of this important fact and pass laws to provide protection for their nursing mothers.

WHEN & WHERE These peaceful protests will take place at Applebee’s locations across the country on Saturday, September 29th at 1:00 PM your local time.

9 Month Infinity Review

Review

When I received 9 Month Infinity wrap, I was immediately excited to try it's awesome design that offers an infinite number of unique and flattering styles. Wether you are a mama that are pregnant or post pregnancy months this is a beautiful product to use. Using the infinity ring and it's luxurious fabric is easy as wrapping a towel around yourself. You are free to create whatever look for any occasion. Perfect for for any occasion and use: the office, your baby shower, a wedding or just hanging out with your friends.

I invited a few of my mama friends over to try it. We are all different shapes and sizes and it all fit very well. I had mama friend who were pregnant, not pregnant at all, mama's post pregnancy, and myself who nurse and are pregnant. We all agreed that this beautiful and very comfortable product fit us all well and that it was easy to put on once we watched the tutorials. I also went to a party and had many comments on how cute my shirt was. Once I told them it was actually a wrap, they were intrigued and amazed at how easy I could nurse Dean. Thank you 9 Month Infinity for this awesome product! I'll be using it for a very long time! :D

The Single Strap

My favorite style to wear!

One Mama's Story

I am a [working, wife/mother, pregnant] woman, who is just trying to get dressed in the morning. I was at that stage where I could stuff myself into my pre-pregnancy clothes, but I surrendered to pulling out my maternity wardrobe from my first child. I couldn't believe how worn and stretched out everything was. So, I began ordering maternity clothes [again]. I was drowning in all of them, but knew in a few short months they would be too small. I just wanted a few nice maternity shirts that I could wear throughout my pregnancy. A shirt I could wear to work and special events, but then still feel comfortable in when I snuggled up in my Yoga pants, after work. I wanted something that would transition through the seasons of my pregnancy. I wanted something I could wear often, but not look like I was wearing the same shirt, every day. And that's how 9 Month Infinity was born.

So any mamas out there experiencing teething zombie babies?! I know I am! Believe it or not, that's not the worst part...I am still exclusively breast feeding Dean while he TEETHS! >.< The pain is horrible for him and for me. I just hope we both get through this fine and with my nipples still intact! Because, I'll be needed them for baby number three too...ah another child to go through this whole teething ordeal with...I can't wait! :/ lol

Child Passenger Safety Week: Day 5

There are three types of car seats you can put your children in: infant car seat [bucket seats], convertible car seats [infant to 35-45 check manual], and booster seats [with a high back or just the seat itself.] Today I will talk about Booster Seats.

Booster seats are recommended for children until they are big enough to properly use a seat belt. Seat belts are engineered for adults, and are thus too big for small children. In the United States, for children under the age of 4 and/or under 40 lbs, a seat with a 5-point harness is suggested instead of a booster seat.

Booster seats "boost" the child and allow the seat belt to sit firmly across the collar bone and chest, with the lap portion fitted to the hips. If the seat belt is not across the collar bone and the hips, it will ride across the neck and the stomach and cause internal damage in the event of a collision. There are two main types of boosters: high back [some of which have energy absorbing foam] and no back.

A new generation of booster seats comes with rigid LATCH connectors that secure to the vehicle's LATCH anchors, improving the seat's stability in the event of a collision. The consumer group is calling on manufacturers and retailers to phase out backless boosters, as it says they don't provide enough protection in side-impact crashes and could put children at risk. So while backless booster cushions are better than using no child seat at all, they do not provide proper protection. That is why we use a high back Graco Booster seat.

The purchase of a used seat is not recommended. Due to the aforementioned concerns regarding expiry dates, crash testing, and recalls, it is often impossible to determine the history of the child restraint when it is purchased second-hand. Children traveling by plane are safer in a child safety seat than in a parent's arms. The FAA and the AAP recommends that all children under 40 lb use a child safety seat on a plane. Booster seats cannot be used on airplanes because they don't have shoulder belts. On average, most seats expire 6 years from the date of manufacture, although this can vary by manufacturer. Like motorcycle helmets, child restraints are tested for use in just one crash event. This means that if the restraint is compromised in any way [with or without the child in it], owners are strongly suggested to replace it. This is due to the uncertainty with how a compromised child restraint will perform in subsequent crashes.

The purchase of a used seat is not recommended. Due to the aforementioned concerns regarding expiry dates, crash testing, and recalls. It's worth spending the money on our children's safety and well being than getting a car seat for a cheap price. Children traveling by plane are safer in a child safety seat than in a parent's arms. The FAA and the AAP recommends that all children under 40 lb use a child safety seat on a plane. Booster seats cannot be used on airplanes because they don't have shoulder belts.

Child Passenger Safety Week: Day 4

There are three types of car seats you can put your children in: infant car seat [bucket seats], convertible car seats [infant to 35-45 check manual], and booster seats [with a full back or just the seat itself.] Today I will talk about Convertible Seats.

Convertible seats can be used throughout many stages. Many convertible seats will transition from a rear-facing seat, to a forward-facing seat, and some then can be used as a booster seat. Many convertible seats allow for 5-35 lbs. Rear-facing, allowing children to be in the safer rear-facing position up to a weight of 35 pounds.

Convertible safety seats can be installed as either rear-facing or forward-facing. There is a large selection available to choose from and weight limits, height limits, and extra features vary from seat to seat and by manufacturer. Seats with a 5-point harness are considered safer than those with an overhead shield. We are transitioning Dean into a Cosco Scenera, still rear-facing of course. Though he is only 20 lbs, he is 31 inches tall.

Convertibles aren't considered the best choice for a newborn because the bottom harness slots are often above the shoulders of most newborns. A seat with low bottom harness slots can be used if it is desired to use a convertible from birth. That is why we opted to use a Chicco Keyfit 30 until he grew out if either in weight or height.

Rear-facing weight limits range from 20 to 35 lbs. Forward-facing limits range from 17.6 to 65 lbs. Most convertible seats in the U.S. have at least a 30 lb rear-facing weight limit, most now to go to 35 lbs, some 40 lbs, and a few 45. The Cosco Scenera rear-facing's weight limit is up to 35 lbs and it forward-facing's weight limit is up to 40 lbs.

The American Academy of Pediatrics [AAP] recommends that children remain rear-facing until they outgrow their convertible seat, regardless of how old they are. Children can remain in a rear-facing seat until they have either outgrown the weight limit for their seat, or the top of their head is within an inch of the top of the shell of the car seat. A permanent fixture in the car using an adult seat belt to hold it in place and a five-point baby harness to hold the infant.

Position: Sitting, recommended rear facing but forward facing is legal, no airbag [with the exception of curtain airbags.]
Recommended weight: 20 to 40 lb.
Approximate age: 9 months to 4 years.

Rear-facing group: It is recommended that children sit rear-facing for as long as possible. In Scandinavian countries, for example, children sit rear-facing until around 4-years-old. Rear-facing car seats are significantly safer in frontal collisions, which are the most likely to cause severe injury and death. Rear facing group car seats are becoming more widespread but are still difficult to source in many countries. Forward-facing group of children are designed to use an adult seat belt to hold the child in place.

Position: Sitting, forward-facing.
Recommended weight: 33 lbs to 55 lbs.
Approximate age: 4 to 6 years.

Booster Seat group of children's position the child so that the adult seat belt is held in the correct position for safety and comfort.
Position: Sitting, forward-facing.
Recommended weight: 48 lbs to 76 lbs.
Approximate age: 4 to 10.

On average, most seats expire 6 years from the date of manufacture, although this can vary by manufacturer. Like motorcycle helmets, child restraints are tested for use in just one crash event. This means that if the restraint is compromised in any way [with or without the child in it], owners are strongly suggested to replace it. Child Passenger Safety Week: Day 3

There are three types of car seats you can put your children in: infant car seat [bucket seats], convertible car seats [infant to 35-45 check manual], and booster seats [with a full back or just the seat itself.] Today I will talk about Infant Car Seats.

'Infant carrier' means a restraint system intended to seat/lay a child in a rearward-facing semi-crescent position. This design distributes the restraining forces over the child's head and body, excluding its limbs, in the event of the front collision.

For young infants, the seat used is an infant carrier with the weight recommendations of 5-20 lbs. Most infant seats made in the US can now be used up to at least 22 lb and 29 inches, with some going up to 35 lbs. We use a Chicco Keyfit 30 which can go up to 30 lbs and 29 inches tall.

Infant carriers are often also called "Bucket Seats" as they resemble a bucket with a handle. Some [not all] seats can be used with the base, or just a carrier strapped in alone. Some seats do not have bases. Ours came with a base. We use the base in our main vehicle, but when I use my father's truck I would strap it in with a seat belt only.

Infant carriers are mounted rear-facing and are designed to "cocoon" against the back of the vehicle seat in the event of a collision. The impact being absorbed in the outer shell of the restraint not the child. Rear-facing seats are deemed the safest, and in the US children must remain in this position until at they are least 1 year of age and at least 20 pounds.

Although some parents are eager to switch to a forward-facing child seat because it seems more "grown up," various countries and car seat manufacturers recommend that children continue to use a rear-facing child seat for as long as physically possible. We personally practice forward facing until age two. Safety is key here!

Position: Sitting, rear facing, no airbag.
Recommended weight: Birth to 29 lbs.
Approximate age: Birth to 15 months.

My Baby Bump Journal: Week 16

[The Boys!]

[Making being lost in the woods look good while 4 months pregnant!]

So one day my wonderful husband thought it would be a great idea to take a walk....Little did I know it'd be the craziest two hours of my third pregnancy life! Here's the story! I am 16 weeks, feeling pretty good same as last week and we drive up to Rutgers Gardens. They have a trail and Frank G. Heylar's Forest. I'll never forget that damn name! Let me just warn you if your a lazy couch potato like me this trail is NOT for you! We started at one and ended up getting lost and looping around for TWO HOURS!!!!! Ending up in number 12. I don't know how many miles that was but THAT WAS NOT A WALK THAT WAS A HIKE! I was wearing flip flops back carrying Dean while Rad carried Max on his shoulders. I would'nt mind if I knew that it was a hike but I was not prepared. Did not stretch, wore flip flops, did not bring water! We started out by Ryders Lane and somewhere near the end we saw route 18 and the restaurant On The Border. We were that close I thought I was playing frogger! Ughk...Rad said, "Don't be mad babe...It was great exorcise wasn't it?" I looked at him as if I was slowly stabbing his soul to death! OH IT WAS HOT TOO! >.< God I was a mess but Max enjoyed himself and in the mess of everything and getting lost we got cool photos! But really it was tiring and crazy! Towards the end seeing all the people I felt like I've been out in the wilderness for a week with no food and I was being rescued! I will NEVER do that again...well until I give birth! lol Long interesting day!
